QUOTE OF THE DAY
Undergraduate education in research universities requires renewed emphasis on a point strongly made by John Dewey almost a century ago:[...]

Why Join the Inquiry Page

Student/Educator

Claude

Q: Why would a Student/Educator want to use the Inquiry Page?

A: Claude, a pre-service educator working toward his Master's Degree in Teaching at Heritage College in Toppenish, WA, uses the page to reinforce his learning as a teacher of both Science and Math, as well as for future reference.

The first thing that got Claude hooked on the Inquiry Page as he perused over an hundred sites last month was the Circle of Inquiry:

This Circle of Inquiry, which is so central to the Inquiry Page, is very philosophically similar to the Math text he uses:

  • LAUNCH -> EXPLORE -> SUMMARIZE (circular) format

As a student of Teaching, Claude has had considerable exposure to Inquiry-based learning:

  • His Math instructor heavily stresses an inquiry-based approach to teaching.
  • His science teacher also stresses the importance of an inquiry-based approach to teaching, and is very enthusiastic about the Inquiry Page.

Finally, as both a graduate student and an educator, Claude uses and endorses the Inquiry Page for a number of reasons:

  • He agrees with the concept that students are the CENTER of education, and that teachers need to lecture less and facilitate problem solving more.
  • As a pre-service teacher (second career businessman) he is glad to see that many people are coming to believe in this concept, because too much of the teaching he sees (from his chronological peers) is lecture and worksheets.
  • He believes that Inquiry-based learning is a great approach for developing rote memory, and that process is at least equal to content in secondary school.
  • He is excited to get to work and facilitate Inquiry-based experiences for his students.
  • His hope for the Inquiry Page is that he will be able to get:
    • Meat and potato ideas on HOW to set up situations for his students.
    • Links to other sites that may reinforce the approach.
    • Ideas and data for fresh research.
