How to Add a Search of Inquiry Units to Your Unit (#11)
In this Tutorial you will learn how to:
- Access the “Edit this Unit” feature
- Add a Search of Inquiry Units to Your Inquiry Unit
- Submit your edited Inquiry Unit
- NOTE: If you see a word in Bold
type , then you should perform that task.
Step 1
From any Inquiry web page you will be able to see the “Inquiry
Units” button in the sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen.
A. Find and click on on this “Inquiry
Units” button. You are now at the “Search Inquiry Units” page.
NOTE: You must be logged-in in order to edit
your own Inquiry Unit. (See tutorial #2.)
B. Either click
on the “Link to my Inquiry Units” link located above the search field, or type
your email address into the search field and click on the “Search” button to
the right. This will bring you to a list of your Inquiry Units.
C. Click on the underlined "View" button
to the left of the unit you want to edit.
D. Click on the "Edit This Unit" button
located at the upper middle part of the page.
Step 2
You are now at the point where you can add a search of Inquiry
Units to your Unit.
A. Open a new browser window (box) on
your computer screen.
- Click on “File”, which is located
in the far upper left-hand corner of the browser window. A number of options
will appear in a box under the word “File”.
- Hold the cursor over the option
“New” until another box of options appears to the right of the word “New”.
- Click on the option “Window”. A new
browser window will appear on your computer screen, identical to the other
browser window.
B. At the top of the new browser window,
within the page’s text, click on “Search Units”. Perform the search that you
want to appear on your Inquiry Unit by typing the
appropriate keywords into the “Search” box and clicking on
the “Search” button to the right of the box.
- For example, suppose you want the user to see all units involving
"American" and "history”. Do a search for these two keywords, then cut
and paste the URL (web address) for the results into your Unit: http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu/bin/search.cgi?command=search&search=american+history
C. In order to cut and paste the URL
(web address) of the desired search results:
- Highlight the URL (web address)
located in the address bar at the top of the browser window.
- Click on “Edit”, which is located
to the left of “File” in the far upper left-hand corner of the browser window.
A number of options will appear in a box under the word “Edit”.
- Click on “Copy”.
- Return to the original browser window, which contains the
Inquiry Unit you are editing. Click the mouse on
the place in the Inquiry Unit form where you want the URL (web address) to
appear.
- Click on “Edit” (see above) and
click on the option “Paste”. The URL (web address) should now be displayed,
as a Hot Link, in your Inquiry Unit.
D. Once you have made the desired changes,
click on the "Submit" button and your updated unit
will be posted immediately.
