How to Insert Images into Your Inquiry Unit (#9)

In this Tutorial you will learn how to:

• Access the “Edit this Unit” feature
• Insert Images into your Unit using the Inquiry Unit Image Library
• Insert Images already on a web server into your Inquiry Unit
• Insert Images not already on a web server into your Inquiry Unit
• Submit your edited Inquiry Unit
• NOTE: If you see a word in Bold type , then you should perform that task.

Step 1

From any Inquiry web page you will be able to see the “Inquiry Units” button in the sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen.

A. Find and click on on this “Inquiry Units” button. You are now at the “Search Inquiry Units” page.

NOTE: You must be logged-in in order to edit your own Inquiry Unit. (See tutorial #2.)

B. Either click on the “Link to my Inquiry Units” link located above the search field, or type your email address into the search field and click on the “Search” button to the right. This will bring you to a list of your Inquiry Units.

C. Click on the underlined "View" button to the left of the unit you want to edit.

D. Click on the "Edit This Unit" button located at the upper middle part of the page.

Step 2

You are now at the point where you can insert images into your Inquiry Unit.

A. You may add small images to your Unit by inserting the appropriate HTML code from the table below. Make sure to place the code where you want the image to appear.

B. To link to an image, such as the Cycle of Inquiry, that is already stored on a web server:

• Type the code (For example: <img src="http://inquiry.uiuc.edu/images/circle.gif" alt="inquiry cycle">) in the section of the Inquiry Unit format where you would like the image to appear.

C. To link to an image that is not already stored on a web server, the image must first be uploaded onto a web server. You can use the Inquiry Page server by means of the "upload" feature at the bottom of the Inquiry Unit form. These files can be images, text, audio, or video.

• If you already know the file location and name(s), type it in the fields provided.
• If you don't know the file name, click on the "Browse…" button to the right of each field.
• Locate the file you have chosen to upload and double click on it. The file location and name will now appear in the field.

  NOTE: The file name should be less than 80 characters, and the file name shouldn't include any special characters except for the underscore character.

• Click on the submit button. The file(s) will be uploaded to the Inquiry Page server under your Unit's directory.
• When you submit your Inquiry Unit, the Inquiry Page will automatically create a hyperlink to each of your uploaded files at the bottom of your Unit.
• If you would like to place the image inside one of the Inquiry Unit boxes, use the following syntax within the box:
  <img src="/bin/file_serve.cgi?file=unit_number/filename.jpg">
  Instead of "unit_number", you use your own unit number which can be found in the browser address bar. Don't put the xml file extension in. Instead of "filename.jpg", you use the filename for the image that you uploaded. This should be listed in the uploaded files list at the bottom of your unit. Here is an example:
  <img src="/bin/file_serve.cgi?file=u12345/myphoto.gif">

D. Once you have made the desired changes, click on the "Submit" button and your updated unit will be posted immediately.
