New features of Version 1.1
Based on users' comments, new features are implemented into Inquiry Page version 1.1. The new features include (as of May 17, 2001)
Navigation
- 'Inquiry in Action' and 'What's New' are added as Inquiry Page menu.
- Inquiry main menu bar has a different order. Since many people commented that important features should come first on the menu, the menu items have been rearranged.
- Now the Inquiry Page has a consistent look through most of the pages. The main menu bar is displayed on the left side for easier navogation. An exception is the 'Inquiry Unit' pages. Since 'Inquiry Unit' requires more space to display the content, it has limited menus on the upper left side of the banner.
- For hierarchical structure of the pages, some pages have sub-menus under the main banner. 'Inquiry' and 'Partner Projects' have this structure.
- For 'Inquiry Unit' and 'Inquiry Event', command buttons are displayed under the main banner. Only related command buttons will be displayed depending on where users are. For example, when a user is adding a new unit, it will not show buttons for "edit this unit", "delete this unit", and "spin-off this unit".
- Alternative texts for images are added. In addition to IE and Netscape under Windows, now Mac IE users can access the alternative texts.
- New texts for the front page, Inquiry Definition, Inquiry Process, and the Circle of Inquiry.
Member Profiles
- User password scheme is now added to the member profile script. To edit or delete 'Inquiry Units' or 'Inquiry Events', users should log-in as the author. Unlike version 1.0, users don't have to login multiple times when they edit/delete multiple Inquiry Units or Events. For this feature, Inquiry Page uses temporary Cookie. Once users log out or close the web browser, it does not leave any trace of username or password on computer. To use the log-in feature, users should enable temporary Cookie of their web browser.
- To remind the user of the password, password emailing (when requested) function is added in the login page.
- Automatic email subscription for 'DIME' and 'Inquiry Developers' email-lists are now enabled.
- You can join/log-in/log-out/change-profile anywhere in the Inquiry Page. Before users log in, the buttons on the upper right side of the banner are for 'join' and 'log-in'. After login, the buttons will change to 'log-out' and 'change profile'.
- Now you can select grade level and subject areas in the profile page. We have more profession options. The names of the Inquiry Partner Projects have been added or corrected.
Inquiry Units
- 'Advanced Search' and 'Browse all Units' are added to the unit search page.
- With Advanced Search, users can browse units by subject areas, grade levels, and partner projects.
- Multiple keyword search is added. Now, users can search 'science high school' to find units containing all three words.
- Users can choose subject areas and partner projects of the unit.
- Users have to fill in name, email, and inquiry question boxes so that they can edit the units later.
- Similar categories are combined into bigger categories in Add and Display unit pages. It means the number of boxs is reduced.
- 'Unit Descriptions' are now changed to 'Unit Rationale'.
- To view the Inquiry Unit after searching, users click hyperlinks 'View' instead of buttons 'Select'. Since they are hyperlinks, users can know which unit links they have visited.
- The author of private Inquiry Units can view/edit/delete the units after logging-in.
- Help text is added for Add-Unit page. More help texts on categories of Inquiry Unit are going to be implemented soon.
- To display more content, the size of the main banner has been reduced, and the command buttons are arranged in one row instead of two.
- The line thickness of the tables (boxes) is reduced for better display.
Inquiry Events
- The format of event date and time has been changed for consistent date and time data format.
Internal scripts and data structure
- The script files for Inquiry Units, Events, and Member Profiles are divided into workable small-sized files.
- The scripts for Inquiry Units, Events, and Member Profiles have been integrated for interoperability.
- Also, the data tags of the Units, Events, and Profiles are unified.
- The scripts for unit search has modified for faster search display.
